How To Create the Perfect Instagram Username

The name you choose for your Instagram page is one of the most important decisions you will ever make. When people decide to search for you, the name needs to be catchy, recognizable and easy to remember. This is why it is so important that you make sure you choose the perfect name for your future brand. Yes, that is right, brand. Many Instagram users have gone on to become successful and some regret not having chosen a better name at the beginning. I am here to inspire you to create the perfect Instagram username and to explain exactly how to do that.

First off, an Instagram username is limited to only 30 characters and should contain only letters, numbers, periods, and underscores. You are not allowed to include symbols or other punctuation marks as a part of your username.

The way in which you design your name can influence how successful you become on Instagram, unless you are already a world-famous brand like Nike or a celebrity that everyone knows by first and last name. Your future audience should be able to read your name and immediately have a good idea of what you represent and what your brand is about. This is the first step in maximizing your growth on Instagram. People will be disappointed or confused when they see content that does not reflect your name.

Are you having problems creating a unique Instagram name? If so, here are some tips to help you find just the right one:

Make it Personal

Make your name personal: use your life for ideas. Take what you love and incorporate that into your name. Let us say that you are a traveler, e.g. @doyoutravel will do. Make sure you select a name that represents you and/or what you do. If you are looking to create a niche, incorporate that into your name.

Keep It Simple

A simple Instagram name is often better. Does that seem obvious? Your followers should not have to struggle pronouncing or spelling your name. How else can they recommend you to other friends or look you up? Make it easy.

Avoid Underscores

It is not always possible to avoid using underscores in your name. If you must, please only use one underscore. This will make it much easier for your target audience.

Use Adjectives

To make a creative name on Instagram it helps to incorporate adjectives that best describe you, e.g. “beautiful” or “adventurous.” You can generate a unique name like @adventurouskate

There are so many you can use… so try some out! Feel free to test them with a name generator.

Do Not Go Overboard

Please keep your username short you are not obliged to use all 30 characters. If you are looking for inspiration, feel free to go through all the pages you are currently following, e.g. @beautifuldestinations The full name AND the username should not at all be cut off. Take your time to consider all options, but the general rule of thumb is that shorter names are easier to remember and search for.

Do Not Copy

Whilst this may be obvious – let us say you have a page that you follow with a name that you absolutely adore. Feel free to use this as inspiration but do not in any way, shape or form copy that name. This would likely result in a legal copyright infringement case; so do not set yourself up for failure. If you want to build your own brand, you have to be unique and stand out in the crowd. You want a name that will inspire your audience.

Check to Make Sure You Can Secure Your Username on All Platforms

Have you found your perfect username? Make sure to check how unique it is here. Most likely you will want to use more than just Instagram to showcase your talent. So, make sure to secure your name on all social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, YouTube, etc.) even if you do not plan on using them all just yet.

Go For It

Hopefully, all these tips have been helpful! One last tip that is commonly overlooked is that once you have decided on the perfect name, you need to get some feedback. Ask your closest friends what they think and let them give you their honest opinion of it. This will give you a good indication of how your future audience might react to your name. Do not let one or two negative opinions change your mind however – you cannot expect everyone to like your name.

Always Remember: Your account name will most likely represent you and what you stand for forever and will have an impact on your future brand. Make sure you stand out and choose a username that best describes who you are. Deep down, make sure you feel giddy, happy, excited and like you want to conquer the world every time you hear it. So, what are you waiting for? 🙂
